An Overtime Ban was implimented by the NUM from 31st October 1983 against the NCB 5.2% pay award and the threat to uneconomic collieries. It lasted in the Nottinghamshire coalfield for seventeen months until 9th March 1985. Voting in the Nottingham Area for the overtime ban was very close with 16 NUM branches being in favour and 15 against.
