Former Linby Colliery Robey Steam Winding Engine Centenary event.
About the Event: The preserved Linby Colliery steam winding engine celebrates its centenary with a special mining heritage event at the Papplewick Pumping Station on Sunday 19th June 2022. Built by Robey’s of Lincoln in 1922, it worked at Linby Colliery until 1982 when it was replaced by electric winding. The engine was moved to the Papplewick site and restored back to running order. It was the last steam winding engine in the National Coal Board (NCB) South Nottinghamshire Area. Linby Colliery was sunk in 1873 and closed in March 1988. Images below show the colliery in 1986 and the redeveloped site just over a decade later.
Mining heritage displays and actvities will take place as part of the centenary event including the Hucknall and Linby Brass band, Historical Coalmining Entertainer, David Coleman, and Songs and Rhymes from the Mines featuring local folk group, King of Rome and local coalmining poetry readings.
