East Midland Collieries 1965 – 2015
Interactive Map
In the five decades from 1965 to 2015 the number of active coal mines in the East Midlands Area decreased dramatically, culminating in the closure of Thoresby Colliery on the 10th of July 2015 – the last deep coal mine in the East Midlands. The closure was followed on the 18th December by Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, effectively ending deep coal extraction in the United Kingdom.
