2023 DH Lawrence Festival: Coalmining themed events

The 2023 DH Lawrence Festival runs from 1st to 10th September 2023 at various venues around Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, and includes several local coalmining themed events. All festival events are free to attend.

Reading Group: Nottingham and the Mining Countryside

A reading and discussion of DH Lawrence’s 1929 essay, ‘Nottingham and the Mining Countryside’, led by Dr. Andrew Harrison, DH Lawrence biographer and Director of the DH Lawrence Research Centre at the University of Nottingham.

Date:  Monday 4th September 2023 at 7pm

A day conference giving a historical insight into the relationship between important historical figures in the local community, the local landscape and society in and around Eastwood.

Breach House Open Days

Guided tours of the Lawrence family’s second Eastwood home, a typical pit house from the late Victorian period. The Breach House was portrayed as The Bottoms in DH Lawrence’s 1913 novel, Sons and Lovers.

Dates: Saturday and Sunday, 9th and 10th September 2023 (11am – 3pm)

Malcolm Gray, former Chair of the DH Lawrence Society, considers two coal mining community themed DH Lawrence short stories, Strike Pay and Her Turn. The Conference will be directed by Bob Haywood.
